Scripture memorization added to Sunday School Curriculum!

Starting this September, we will be adding a memory verse program to our Sunday School curriculum. Each month, children in grades 1-5 will be encouraged to memorize 1 to 2 Scriptures that support the lessons being taught that month. The Christ Lutheran Church Memory Verse program is designed to encourage our children to memorize Holy Scripture. Children are rewarded for learning each memory verse. The reward is a prize they pick out of our “Treasure Box”. Each month has a Scripture for the children to memorize and each month the prize is different.

Our goal is for children to learn Scripture, and for that reason, we will accept a memorized Scripture at anytime – not just during the designated month. We believe that the Holy Spirit works through Scripture. Scripture memorization is, therefore, an important part of growing in Christ. Each child will receive a booklet of all the memory verses for the school year. They will also receive a copy of the monthly memory verse each Sunday and it will be listed in the bulletin. Our children will also need the help of their parents and the encouragement of our church family to learn these verses. My experience with Scripture memorization is this: first there is reluctance to learn but once learned there is great pride in their achievement.

In September, our children will be learning about the Old Testament – where it came from, who wrote it and why it is important to us. The Memory Verse is: “..man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” Deuteronomy 8:3b
